Ron Teague
Shelby Shag Club

I was born in Lenoir, NC and graduated from Gamewell-Collettsville High School. I moved to Shelby, NC in 1982, attending Cleveland Technical College, now known as Cleveland Community College, and Appalachian State University. I have been DJ’ing since 1978 but unfortunately was not introduced to the “shag community” until after I moved to Shelby.
College activities included being elected as Student Government Association President, President of the Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Society, Western Division Chairperson of the NC Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association, and one of four students in the US elected to the Gamma Beta Phi National Executive Committee.
I began to really become involved in the beach and shag community about 15 years ago, when I began hosting radio shows at both WSGE 91.7 and The BOSS AM Stations 730 AM and 1450 AM, and co-hosted a syndicated radio show “Going On A Beach Trip,” with the legendary Billy Scott for 2 years, with one “Cammy” nomination to our credit. I also began playing music on the Shag Club circuit and co-hosting events with various beach bands, and was asked to help organize the annual Kings Mountain Beach Blast, held each year in July.
I also started taking shag lessons for the second time at about the same time, and began attending SOS and the “Cammy” awards as well. In the Fall of 2011, with no shag club in Shelby, I, along with several other members of the community, got together and started the Shelby Shaggers. I have served as President, Vice-President, and am currently the Membership Chairperson on the Board as well as involved in teaching beginner and intermediate shag lessons for the city of Belmont, NC.

Wayne Bennett
Golden Isles Shag Club

A native of Delaware, Wayne was active in High School sports. A member of the basketball and baseball teams and was named All Henlopen Confernce in 1967 and 68 in baseball. He played American Legion Baseball also for the Lower Delaware Champion Post 3 in Milford. He was invited to a try out camp by the Cincinnati Reds his senior year of high school.

Wayne attended college at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC and the love of the south drew him back there with employment leaving Delaware back to Greenville with his family in 1980.

He states " A beach trip to OD with college buddies was my first introduction to Carolina Beach Music and a dance called Shag". "A friend played the Tams and Clovers on his 8 track all the way from Greenville to OD and I was hooked".

After working for Ryans Family Steak Houses and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for over 20 years I finally took shag lessons at a new Shag Club in Greenville, SC called Dockers. It was there that friendships in the shag world were made along with meeting my wife Judy Doke whom he met in Ducks at Mid Winter SOS in 2003. After a year of courtship between Greenville and Brunswick Ga I proposed to a lady who loved the Shag lifestyle as much as I did.

A job relocation by Krispy Kreme Corp allowed me to move to SE Georgia and begin a new life in marriage with a wonderful lady. Judy needed a shag dance instructor helper so I filled in teaching the basic steps of the dance I love and continue to this day for the Golden Isles Shag Club.

He had accumulated so much music that he started DJing for the Golden Isles Shag Club and hasn't looked back. He is a member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ's and National Association of R & B Dee Jays and the Carolina Beach Music Academy.

Five of Wayne's children live in Greenville, SC and one daughter resides in Austin, TX. He has six grandchildren.

Wayne is active in the Golden Isles Shag Club DJing every Thursday night when they dance and attends almost all ACSC workshops, and SOS events.

Ed Hamer
Northen Virginia Shag Club

Ed Hamer is a relative newcomer to the Beach Music Scene, although he first was exposed to shag dancing on Hilton Head in the mid 80’s it wasn’t until a move to Durham in 1998 that he fell in love with Beach Music after hearing Big John Ruth on Sunday nights. Another move to Northern Virginia in 2005 provided an opportunity for Ed and his wife Pam to finally learn how to shag. After joining the Northern Virginia Shag Club and taking the basic lessons, he and his wife then decided to take private lessons from Janice Grimes. He is currently Vice President of the NVSC and a Shag Club Rep for the CBMA. He has been a member of the CBMA for the past 6 years and he and Pam have attended the last 8 CBMA awards show, have tickets for this years show and are looking forward to many more.

Arlene Johnson McMurtry - Belmont NC

Charlotte Shag Club Lynns Dance Club; Charlotte NC
My love for dance and band music began in the late 50's- early 60's doing the Jitterbug and listening to local bands like The Shakers who played at a nearby venue called Cat Square. I have had past involvement with Gaston Shaggers and Shelby Shaggers. which are both great clubs. I have a great husband named George that enjoys music but doesn't share the love for SHAG as I do, however he never complains when I want to go dance. We have four sons and daughters in law w/ eight grands and one great grand that we share. We both enjoy church, golf and boating. My volunteer work has been with the Look Good Feel Better Cancer Recovery Program, which is very rewarding as I have been a working Cosmetologist since 1968.and am the owner of Scissor Smith & Co. Salon in Kings Mountain, NC. I also am active with the Keep Belmont Beautiful Program coordinating the Yard of the Month which is a lot of fun. I was excited when I was approached to work with the CBMA and am looking forward to becoming better aquainted with all of the many people involved in all of the facets of the Beach Music Industry. Thank you for the opportunity to serve .
