I was born in Lenoir, NC and graduated from Gamewell-Collettsville High School.
I moved to Shelby, NC in 1982, attending Cleveland Technical College, now
known as Cleveland Community College, and Appalachian State University.
I have been DJ’ing since 1978 but unfortunately was not introduced to the
“shag community” until after I moved to Shelby.
College activities included being elected as Student Government Association President, President of the Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Society, Western Division Chairperson of the NC Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association, and one of four students in the US elected to the Gamma Beta Phi National Executive Committee.
I began to really become involved in the beach and shag community about 15 years ago, when I began hosting radio shows at both WSGE 91.7 and The BOSS AM Stations 730 AM and 1450 AM, and co-hosted a syndicated radio show “Going On A Beach Trip,” with the legendary Billy Scott for 2 years, with one “Cammy” nomination to our credit. I also began playing music on the Shag Club circuit and co-hosting events with various beach bands, and was asked to help organize the annual Kings Mountain Beach Blast, held each year in July.
I also started taking shag lessons for the second time at about the same time, and began attending SOS and the “Cammy” awards as well. In the Fall of 2011, with no shag club in Shelby, I, along with several other members of the community, got together and started the Shelby Shaggers. I have served as President, Vice-President, and am currently the Membership Chairperson on the Board as well as involved in teaching beginner and intermediate shag lessons for the city of Belmont, NC.
Capital City Shag Club
My love of music came from growing up in Pittsburgh, Pa. My family loved music
and dancing. As a teenager, I did the jitterbug and enjoyed all of the
music of the 50's and 60's. When I moved to Columbia, SC in 1977, I fell
in love with shag and beach music and the South Carolina State Dance...The
Shag! I wanted to learn everything there was to know about the Shag and
it's music as soon as possible!
I am a graduate of Penn State University in State College, Pa. I was a first grade teacher for 35 years. The first 11 years of teaching were in Pittsburgh, Pa and the remainder of the years at Seven Oaks Elementary, Lexington School Distict 5 in Columbia, SC. I always say that if I can organize a field trip and tend to every detail for 20- 6 years olds and no one cries, gets lost or is hurt in any way, then I can organize anything! In 2002 when I retired I was able to pursue my passion
...the Shag and the Music!
In 1992, I became a member of the Palmetto Shag Club, Columbia, SC.
In 1993, I began giving shag lessons and line dance lessons which I continue to enjoy doing today.
In 2004, I became the President of the Palmetto Shag Club. I served as Vice President for two years previous to being President. I was the co-chair of Southern Comfort III and Southern Comfort VI and as president I was the Event Chair of Southern Comfort VII and VIII. I also served as social chairperson for the club.
In 2007, I was asked to sit on the Board representing the Capital City Shag Club for the Beach Music Shows at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC. Harry Turner and Billy Scott organized the Beach Music Shows which had great performances by many beach bands. The Capital City Shag Club provided a history of the Shag, gave shag demonstrations and shag lessons.

After working for Ryans Family Steak Houses and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for over 20 years I finally took shag lessons
at a new Shag Club in Greenville, SC called Dockers. It was there that friendships in the shag world were made along
with meeting my wife Judy Doke whom he met in Ducks at Mid Winter SOS in 2003. After a year of courtship between
Greenville and Brunswick Ga I proposed to a lady who loved the Shag lifestyle as much as I did.
A job relocation by Krispy Kreme Corp allowed me to move to SE Georgia and begin a new life in marriage with a
wonderful lady. Judy needed a shag dance instructor helper so I filled in teaching the basic steps of the dance

Ed Hamer is a relative newcomer to the Beach Music Scene, although he first was exposed to shag dancing on Hilton Head in the mid 80’s it wasn’t until a move to Durham in 1998 that he fell in love with Beach Music after hearing Big John Ruth on Sunday nights. Another move to Northern Virginia in 2005 provided an opportunity for Ed and his wife Pam to finally learn how to shag. After joining the Northern Virginia Shag Club and taking the basic lessons, he and his wife then decided to take private lessons from Janice Grimes. He is currently Vice President of the NVSC and a Shag Club Rep for the CBMA. He has been a member of the CBMA for the past 6 years and he and Pam have attended the last 8 CBMA awards show, have tickets for this years show and are looking forward to many more.
